This is definitely one of the coolest races. Swimmers in wetsuits take over the streets of Fisherman's Wharf on their way to the ferry boats. Once at Alcatraz you line up to jump of the boat. (Those of you without wetsuits, beware: there is about a 10 min in water wait time if you jump off the boat first.) I am reminded of a happier version of the Titanic as 800 swimmers bob in the water awaiting the horn to sound. The current pulls towards the Golden Gate Bridge so swim towards the left of the aquatic park pier opening. The feeling of the cold water is truly exhilarating! Camera crews and family members meet you at the San Francisco shore. You and your loved ones are then welcomed to your share of complimentary cocoa, clam chowder, and snacks and an awards ceremony. This race is a great one so sign up months in advance!
