What an awesome race!! I think my favorite part was that swimming turned into a team sport. I did the 5 mile and my boyfriend kayaked for me. It was so much fun! I never had to look up to see if I was going straight because the kayaker guides you. The first part of the race is in crystal clear water. (You can see the sandy bottoms and harmless leopard sharks, bat rays, fish). The water temperature is great. You do two 2.5 mile loops. The start is not chaotic like swim starts can be. Kayaks are available to rent for $25-$30. There are all level swimmers who do the race. They also have a 1.5 mile race. It was well organized and I even got a pair of goggles in the goodie bag! SO COOL! Plus, after the race you just hang out and play on the beautiful beach!
I only gave it a difficulty rating of 3 because I did not have to run the leg of the race that started at 7000 ft and ended at 8300 ft. (or something crazy like that). We were a team of 4 and had a great time and got a great workout! The best part of this race is that you compete in the event but also get to cheer on runners! My favorite part was driving by our runner and other runners and blasting the music and cheering them on or pulling over and doing a cheer/dance for runners. The scenery is gorgeous and how cool is it to say that you did a race that started in Stanley, ID and ended in Ketchum, Idaho. There is plenty of camping and lodging available, but make your reservations early. The race starts pretty early and is pricey, but SO WORTH IT! We had an amazing time! In Ketchum, Idaho they give you passes to the YMCA so you can shower and clean if you want. Or hot tub it like we did. If you live outside of Idaho this a great race turned vacation. Ketchum is a great town with all kinds of outdoor activities, if you wanted to extend your visit.
HALF MARATHON What a fun race! It was well organized and there was beautiful scenery. You start at Lucky Peak and head to Boise along the river for most of the race. It isn't expensive, has a decent start time (8 am, I think), and you get a great quick dry t-shirt! There is a great lunch right by the river after the race. You should do it! They also have a 10K and full marathon.
