So, I believe this race used to be called the Home Depot Half Marathon. I did this race back in 2000, and I probably should have trained more than I did. A half marathon is the longest race I have ever done, and I was really proud of myself for finishing even though it wasn't an easy task. The day I did this race, it was freezing cold, extremely windy, and pouring rain! I did okay until mile 10, and then I spent the last three miles crying and just wishing I was at the end. The course was really pretty, especially the last part which goes right along Ocean Beach. I remember receiving a nice long sleeve t-shirt after the race, which I changed into immediately because I was soaked from the rain. There was also lots of snacks and freebies after this race which is always nice. I think I would do this race again in the future, but I would train more and better weather would be a bonus for sure!
Since my Mother grew up in Pacific Palisades, and my Grandmother still lives there, I am sure I have been invloved in this race more times than I can remember, but I the first time I officially participated in this race was in July of 2001 when I was almost 5 months pregnant with my first child. Despite being pregnant and having to stop to pee numerous times, I actually really enjoyed this race. It is pretty neat to run through the Palisades and check out all the huge and gorgeous homes. It is a local tradition to run the race and it was all very festive and fun! I even remember seeing Bob Saget from Full House and also Elaine from Seinfeld when I did this race. So, if you want to see some famous people and enjoy some 4th of July festivities, this race is right up your alley!
This event feels like more of a party than a running race! It is fun, but can be overwhelming because of the huge and crazy crowd. Mostly everyone is dressed up and drinking, and there are even naked people of all ages strutting their stuff. The end of the race is fun because there is always a concert to enjoy. I think it would be fun to do this race again, and I might even dress up!
I did this race years ago when it was still called Houlihans to Houlihans. The course is beautiful and it is a pretty challenging run. Running across the Golden Gate Bridge was an unexpected uphill climb, but the rest of the course was mostly flat. There is lots of goodies at the end of the race, and they give out long sleeve t-shirts which is great. I would most definitely do this race again!
